Yohani performing on stage

Yohani is one of South Asia’s most recognized cross-border music voices — blending Sinhala, Hindi, and English with ease, and inspiring a new wave of global listeners from Sri Lanka to the world.

Early Life and Education

Yohani Diloka De Silva was born on 30 July 1993 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Due to her father's military assignments, Yohani experienced a mobile upbringing, residing in various locations across Sri Lanka and abroad, including periods in Bangladesh and Malaysia.

She commenced her education at Visakha Vidyalaya, a prominent girls’ school in Colombo, attending from 1999 to 2010. During her time there, she participated in extracurricular activities such as swimming, water polo, and Wushu. Additionally, she was a member of the school's Western music band, where she learned to play the French horn. Her initial exposure to music began with piano lessons, encouraged by her mother.

In 2010, Yohani relocated to the United Kingdom to pursue her Advanced Level studies at Hatch End High School in London, completing them in 2012.

Family Background and Influences

Yohani comes from a family with strong professional backgrounds. Her father, Major General Prasanna de Silva, served in the Sri Lanka Army, and her mother, Dinithi De Silva, worked as a flight attendant for SriLankan Airlines; both are now retired. She has one younger sister, Shavindri De Silva, who is a medical doctor practicing in Sri Lanka.

Musically, Yohani cites diverse influences, including international artists such as the Bee Gees, Eminem, Rihanna, Avenged Sevenfold, and Portishead. Her varied cultural experiences, living in countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Singapore, have significantly shaped her musical style and perspectives.

Higher Education and Musical Beginnings

After completing her A-Levels in the United Kingdom, Yohani returned to Sri Lanka to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. It was during this period that music began to take on a more central role in her life. In between academic responsibilities, she started experimenting with music production and digital recording, sharing early covers on platforms like YouTube.

Her passion for music continued alongside her academic pursuits, and in 2016, she moved to Melbourne, Australia, to undertake a Master's degree in Professional Accounting at Central Queensland University. While studying abroad, Yohani further explored her artistic identity, writing songs and expanding her musical influences. Her growing interest in music eventually led her to make a pivotal decision: to return to Sri Lanka and pursue a full-time career as an artist.

Musical Beginnings and Rise - (2015-2020)

Yohani

Yohani’s entry into music began not with a stage, but behind the scenes — through a creative partnership that would ultimately define her artistic journey. While completing her bachelor's degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Yohani took on an internship at CMA CGM , a global shipping and logistics firm located at HNB Towers in Colombo 10. It was there, through a mutual friend, that she met Dilanjan Seneviratne , then working at Hatton National Bank in the same building.

The connection marked the beginning of a decade-long creative collaboration. Yohani soon began assisting Dilanjan Seneviratne, Banura Sooriyapperuma, and Shanellie White — co-founders of Theewra Worldwides , a multidisciplinary creative agency that would later rebrand as WYLD Global , with offices across Sri Lanka, the UAE, and beyond. Initially helping with photography and video production, Yohani developed her visual storytelling skills and eventually stepped in front of the camera herself. Her first-ever YouTube music video was conceptualized and produced by Dilanjan, and nearly all her subsequent visuals from 2016 to present have involved his creative direction.

This period marked a turning point. In 2016, Yohani uploaded her debut music cover, a blend of "Satellite" and "Stealing Time" by Above & Beyond. That same year, her bilingual rendition of "Pehla Nasha" (Hindi/Sinhala) crossed 5 million views, sparking her emergence as a unique new voice in Sri Lanka's music space.

By 2017, Yohani was earning widespread attention. Her mashup "සයුරේ / කටු අකුලේ / උන්මාද වූ" became a local YouTube hit. More significantly, her cover of "Deviyange Bare", a drill team rap song, went viral — making her the first female rapper in Sri Lanka to gain major online traction. Her distinctive delivery and genre-hopping style earned her the nickname “Rap Princess” from Sri Lankan fans and online publications.

She also performed live for the first time at the Nadeeka & Nadeeka concert in Melbourne, Australia, further expanding her confidence and experience on stage.

In 2018, while Yohani was pursuing her master’s degree in Melbourne,Dilanjan Seneviratne officially founded Pettah Effect, an artist incubator and label based in Colombo. The imprint would later play a key role in Yohani’s original music releases and brand positioning, operating alongside Theewra (now WYLD) to manage both her musical and visual content.

In 2019, she began performing more widely across Sri Lanka. Her first ticketed concert, Rendezvous, took place in June, followed by a second show On the Rocks in November. That same year, she released a cover of "Pana Senehasa" which went on to surpass 2 million views on YouTube. Her "Ultimate Mashup Cover", produced in partnership with Red Bull Sri Lanka, amassed over 10 million views and solidified her presence as a mainstream digital performer.

By 2020, Yohani’s brand had matured. She was appointed Brand Ambassador for Prima Kottu Mee, a leading instant noodle brand popular among Sri Lanka’s youth. In January, she headlined her first solo ticketed concert, Yohani's Unfiltered Night, followed in February by her first international solo performance at Holiday Inn Dubai. In July, she participated in Sri Lanka’s first post-COVID drive-in concert, organized by Dialog Axiata, performing alongside major acts like BnS.

That same year, she began releasing original music in Sinhala, including "Aaye", "Sitha Dawuna", "Rawwath Dasin", and "Merry Christmas Baby". These tracks marked her shift from cover artist to an original pop singer with a modern, global-facing sound.

By the end of 2020, Yohani had cemented her place in Sri Lanka’s contemporary music scene — not yet known globally, but regarded as a trailblazer at home, and a rare female artist combining performance, production, and creative vision with a growing team behind her.

Viral Breakthrough – "Manike Mage Hithe" (2021)

Yohani

In May 2021, Yohani released a Sinhala cover of “Manike Mage Hithe”, a track originally composed by Chamath Sangeeth and sung by Satheeshan Rathnayaka. Her version, minimalist in arrangement and emotionally resonant, showcased her vocal texture and subtle charisma — qualities that quickly resonated with audiences far beyond Sri Lanka.

The video began to spread rapidly across TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube, first gaining traction in Sri Lanka and then exploding across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and the South Asian diaspora. Despite the language barrier, the performance captivated millions through its mood, melody, and authenticity.

The song surpassed 100 million views on YouTube within weeks and fueled over 16 billion views across social platforms through user-generated content. Major Indian celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Madhuri Dixit, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Tiger Shroff shared or responded to the song, amplifying its momentum across mainstream and digital media. It ranked among the most-viewed South Asian music videos of the year, appearing in YouTube’s Top Trending charts across multiple countries.

Yohani soon became a familiar name on Indian television. She made her Bollywood television debut with a performance on Bigg Boss 15, hosted by Salman Khan, followed by guest appearances on The Big Picture with Ranveer Singh, Indian Idol Season 12, and The Kapil Sharma Show. These appearances solidified her presence in Indian pop culture and introduced her to millions beyond her existing digital audience.

Her viral success also opened the doors to Bollywood playback singing. Yohani was invited by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series to perform a reimagined Hindi version of "Manike" for the 2022 film Thank God, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Nora Fatehi. The track featured Jubin Nautiyal and was arranged by Tanishk Bagchi, becoming one of the most anticipated Bollywood music moments of the year. The Hindi version debuted across major platforms and charted widely in both India and Sri Lanka.

By the end of 2021, Yohani had achieved a level of success that no Sri Lankan artist had ever reached in history. Her version of Manike Mage Hithe transcended linguistic, cultural, and national boundaries — marking a defining moment not just in her own career, but in Sri Lanka’s presence on the global music map.

Bollywood Collaborations (2022–2024)

Following the overwhelming success of Manike Mage Hithe, Yohani transitioned into mainstream Bollywood as both a playback singer and a featured artist — a milestone that marked the formal expansion of her career into India’s commercial music industry.

In 2022, she recorded the official Hindi remake of “Manike” for the Bollywood film *Thank God* , starring Sidharth Malhotra and Nora Fatehi. The track, composed by Tanishk Bagchi and co-sung with Jubin Nautiyal, retained elements of the original Sinhala chorus while introducing new Hindi verses. The music video, featuring Yohani’s vocals alongside Nora Fatehi’s performance, was a commercial hit and became one of the most streamed Bollywood songs of the year across platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and JioSaavn.

The release established Yohani as a fresh voice in India’s playback landscape. What made the moment particularly significant was that she entered Bollywood not as a debutante talent discovery — but as a global artist already carrying a massive audience of her own.

She followed this with a series of high-profile collaborations under T-Series and other major banners:

"Jehda Nasha" – for the film *An Action Hero* (2022), a new version of the Punjabi hit, featuring Yohani alongside Amar Jalal, IP Singh, Tanishk Bagchi, and Faridkot. The track blended Punjabi pop with club production and was used in promotional campaigns across social media and cinema.

"Chaudhary" – a multi-genre fusion track in collaboration with Amit Trivedi, Jubin Nautiyal, and Mame Khan. The release paid tribute to Rajasthan’s folk music tradition and showcased Yohani’s adaptability across Indian sonic textures.

"Chunari Mein Daag" – an independent single featuring Tony Kakkar and rapper Ikka, known for its dance-ready production and stylish video aesthetic.

"What’s Happening" – a Telugu-language track featured in the film *Dhamaka*, adding a regional South Indian dimension to Yohani’s multilingual reach.

In all of these collaborations, Yohani demonstrated not only vocal versatility but an ability to move seamlessly across languages and genres — from folk fusions and romantic ballads to dance tracks and regional cinema.

Yohani

During this period, she also became a frequent presence in Indian music media — appearing on Spotify India campaigns, GQ India interviews, Red FM playlists, and social content across Sony Music, Zee Music, and T-Series’ massive digital ecosystem.

By 2024, Yohani had secured a place in Bollywood’s evolving pop infrastructure — not just as a one-hit crossover, but as a recurring voice in India's commercial soundscape. Her ability to move between Sinhala, Hindi, and Telugu projects has made her one of the most genre-fluid and internationally visible South Asian artists of her generation.

Kella (2023)

Yohani’s debut studio album Kella, released in 2023, marked her emergence as a fully realized recording artist. The creative direction and executive production were led by Dilanjan , now an established music executive and founder of Outright Play, a global entertainment and artist management company. Having first worked with Yohani during her university years — producing her earliest music videos and visual content — Dilanjan’s evolution as a creative entrepreneur paralleled Yohani’s own rise as an artist. Their shared history gave Kella its distinctive voice: emotionally intense, genre-defying, and reflective of a decade of mutual growth.

Several songs from the album, including Submerged, Free to Love, and Golu Wela, became key highlights in Yohani’s live performances. Kella was also noted for its striking visual language, campaign rollout, and thematic coherence — becoming a generational milestone for digital-native Sinhala music.

Aadarei (2025)

Released in 2025, Aadarei was Yohani’s second full-length studio album — a softer, more introspective work that offered a thematic and stylistic contrast to her debut. Aadarei was produced by a trusted team of long-time collaborators, including Pasan Liyanage, Methun SK, Shenal Maddumage, Dilanjan, and others — with Yohani deeply involved in songwriting and conceptual direction. The soundscape leaned into soft synths, acoustic instrumentation, and ambient textures, allowing her vocals and lyricism to take center stage.

The album was supported by an extensive international rollout: a 7-city tour in India, music videos shot across Sri Lanka, Maldives, India, and Dubai, and a sold-out homecoming concert in Kandy. A private album listening event at ITC Ratnadipa and a series of “Secret Sessions” offered fans a more intimate experience with the material.

Aadarei was widely praised for its honesty and simplicity, rounding off Yohani’s early discography with emotional clarity and sonic finesse. Together, Kella and Aadarei form the creative spine of her identity as an artist — from bold expression to vulnerable introspection, each a chapter in her ongoing evolution.

Cultural Influence & Legacy

Yohani

Impact on Sri Lanka

Yohani’s rise as an independent artist represents a turning point in Sri Lanka’s music history. Between 2016 and 2020, she emerged as the country’s most recognizable online musician — known early on as Sri Lanka’s “Rap Princess”, thanks to her genre-blending covers and original rap performances on YouTube. Her digital-first approach disrupted conventional pathways to fame, showing young Sri Lankans that self-publishing, multilingual storytelling, and visual creativity could build global careers.

Yohani also elevated Sinhala music beyond domestic audiences. Prior to 2021, Sinhala-language tracks rarely crossed borders — but her approach to rhythm, visual style, and social media engagement helped recenter the global conversation around Sri Lankan artistry. In doing so, she created space for a new wave of creators to view music not only as a cultural output, but as a viable and scalable career path.

Global Reach

The viral success of “Manike Mage Hithe” marked a historic moment for Sri Lanka’s place in the international music industry. The track didn’t just top local charts — it dominated India’s YouTube trending page, inspired remakes in over 30 languages, and became one of the most shared songs in the region’s digital history. With billions of views across platforms, the song introduced Sinhala as a pop language to millions outside the island.

Following this breakout, Yohani appeared on major Indian television shows like Bigg Boss The Kapil Sharma Show, , and Indian Idol, helping her cement mainstream visibility across South Asia. Her collaborations with Indian chart-toppers such as Jubin Nautiyal, Tanishk Bagchi, Tony Kakkar, and Amit Trivedi further signaled her position as a transnational artist.

Yohani also performed in high-profile venues across the UAE, Australia, the UK, and India, and her music has been covered in press outlets such as BBC, Rolling Stone India, The Hindu, and The Times of India — an international media presence that is rare for any Sri Lankan artist, past or present.

Generational Influence

Yohani's influence extends well beyond her music. She is widely regarded by young Sri Lankans — and by fans across South Asia — as a symbol of modern artistry, self-made success, and cross-cultural confidence. Her aesthetic choices, multilingual fluency, and ability to connect with fans across platforms have made her a reference point for Gen Z and millennial artists.

Her journey — from self-shot bedroom covers to packed stadiums — has inspired young creators to believe in the power of authenticity and perseverance. For many young women, especially in South Asia, Yohani represents the possibility of artistic freedom without compromise. Her presence in fashion, brand campaigns, and entrepreneurship (including her role as co-founder of the fashion label Licenced) solidifies her legacy as a multidimensional creative force.

Media Appearances and Public Persona

Yohani’s rise to fame has been accompanied by a carefully evolving public persona shaped through media exposure, televised appearances, and brand affiliations. From viral musician to household name, her presence across South Asian mainstream media has solidified her role as not just a singer-songwriter, but also a recognizable cultural figure.

Her Bollywood television debut began with a high-profile appearance on Bigg Boss 15, hosted by Salman Khan, where she performed “Manike Mage Hithe” live for a national audience. This moment marked a significant leap from internet virality to prime-time Indian television, creating a turning point in her visibility across the Indian subcontinent. Shortly after, she appeared on The Big Picture with Ranveer Singh, followed by guest features on The Kapil Sharma Show and Indian Idol, further reinforcing her mainstream appeal.

Yohani's ease in multilingual environments — switching fluently between Sinhala, Hindi, and English — allowed her to navigate these platforms with authenticity and relatability, broadening her fanbase across linguistic and cultural lines. These appearances were not limited to performances; they also included interviews where she was able to showcase her personality: grounded, articulate, and versatile.

In addition to music-centered platforms, Yohani became a regular guest on South Asian radio stations, including Red FM, Mirchi FM, and City 1016, where she spoke about her musical journey, her Sri Lankan identity, and her ambitions. She was also featured on The Kris Fade Show on Virgin Radio Dubai — one of the most influential English-language radio platforms in the Middle East — marking her relevance in diasporic and crossover music markets.

Her story and image have been extensively covered by leading regional and international outlets, including The Hindu, Times of India, The Daily Mirror, BBC, Rolling Stone India, Forbes India, and The Sunday Times (Sri Lanka). These features often focus on her trailblazing role as a Sri Lankan artist breaking into Bollywood and international music, her digital-first career trajectory, and her ability to maintain cultural authenticity while navigating global platforms.

Yohani’s reputation is further shaped by her consistent brand language across interviews and public content — always expressing humility, gratitude for her collaborators, and a clear focus on growth. She is often described as “soft-spoken” yet “fearlessly experimental,” a juxtaposition that has become part of her unique charm.

Her fashion sense — minimalist, often monochromatic with edgy accessories — has drawn attention from South Asian fashion outlets and earned her collaborations with regional designers and global brands alike. From music festivals to press conferences and television sets, Yohani’s presence is defined by a sense of quiet confidence that resonates with both fans and industry professionals.

With over 3.9 million YouTube subscribers, 1.2 million monthly Spotify listeners, and consistent engagement on Instagram and TikTok, Yohani’s public image is reinforced by a loyal digital community that mirrors her diverse appeal: youth audiences, diaspora South Asians, music industry insiders, and emerging artists from the region.

As Yohani continues to expand her musical catalog and global appearances, her media persona remains a balanced combination of Sri Lankan heritage, digital fluency, and cross-border artistry — a model for the modern South Asian entertainer.

LICENCED – Co-Founder & Creative Direction

In 2024, Yohani expanded her creative portfolio by co-founding Licenced, a high-concept streetwear and lifestyle label based in Colombo. As Artistic Director, she plays an active role in shaping the brand’s visual identity, narrative language, and cross-cultural positioning.

Licenced is rooted in the philosophy of mastery, taste, and cultural fluency. It redefines South Asian streetwear by blending premium materials, minimalist design, and personal storytelling — created for a generation that values individuality over conformity. Yohani’s personal aesthetic and creative discipline directly inform the brand’s tone and ethos, appealing to a cross-section of emerging creatives, tastemakers, and cultural leaders across Colombo, Mumbai, and Dubai.

Under her direction, Licenced has established itself as a brand for the “set apart” — individuals who seek not just fashion, but meaning and distinction in what they wear. The brand’s campaigns are often executed in collaboration with Yohani’s long-time creative partners at WYLD Global and Outright Play, and feature capsule collections that reflect themes of resilience, expression, and identity.

Yohani’s unique position as both a global artist and creative entrepreneur gives Licenced authenticity and aspirational power. The brand stands as a natural extension of her artistic philosophy — merging music, visual design, and cultural commentary into a single lifestyle expression.

In doing so, Yohani becomes one of the few South Asian female music artists to co-lead a fashion brand at this scale, further cementing her influence beyond music and into youth culture, fashion, and creative enterprise.

Yohani

Vision and Future Direction

As of 2025, Yohani stands at a rare intersection in South Asian entertainment — a globally touring artist, cultural ambassador, and creative entrepreneur who has redefined what it means to emerge from a small island nation onto the world stage.

With two studio albums, charting singles across three languages, and a growing portfolio of international collaborations, she continues to expand both her sound and her audience. Her work with artists like Edward Maya, Sean Paul, and regional legends in India has positioned her not just as a performer, but as a bridge between cultural worlds.

In parallel, her role as Artistic Director of Licenced and her collaborations through Outright Play reflect a deeper commitment to building systems of representation, creative infrastructure, and aesthetic leadership for Sri Lankan and South Asian talent. She remains closely involved in mentoring artists, curating live experiences, and directing brand campaigns — always grounded in the philosophy of quality, honesty, and creative freedom.

Looking ahead, Yohani continues to explore new territories — musically, geographically, and culturally — with a focus on long-form storytelling, genre innovation, and building meaningful artistic communities. She is actively shaping her legacy — not only as the most globally recognized Sri Lankan artist of her generation, but as a visionary influencing the future of South Asian creativity.
